Do you know what’s in your skincare?

Take a brief look at skincare throughout history and you’ll find yourself wading through a plethora of ingredients and formulas, some of which you may know while others are completely foreign. Beginning with the most natural home remedies such as concoctions made of eggs or animal fat and face masks made of honey and various wild flowers, then delving into more extreme skincare solutions like the harsh cleansers and skin lighteners of the 1800’s. We’ve learned a lot over time about what works, what doesn’t, and what’s actually beneficial for the health and longevity of our skin.

When it comes to ingredients there’s been a growing trend of transparency in the skincare community that we are totally here for. We want to know what’s in the products we use every day, what exactly are we putting onto our skin? It’s our largest organ you know, so what we put on it and absorbs into it is pretty important! And taking it one step further, what could those ingredients mean long term for the health of our skin? So today we’re talking all things transparency, decoding some of the skincare jargon, and delving into why it’s important to know what’s in your favorite formulas!

So where did this desire for transparency come from and what exactly does that mean? Transparency itself is pretty simple, it’s honesty. In skincare this looks like being honest, truthful, and clear about the ingredients you use in your formulas, where they come from, even down to the packaging your product comes in. All of this builds a picture for the consumer and helps inform their decision to buy or not. The growing desire for this sort of information and clarity when purchasing was something that grew naturally over time along with the growth of technology, current events like climate change and even the ongoing pandemic. It’s all lead us to a desire to know more about the products we consume and honestly, shoppers today have so much knowledge at their fingertips it’s only natural to be curious! Where our purchasing decisions used to be made based largely on word of mouth now we not only take reviews into account but a whole line-up of other factors from whether or not the product is clean to it’s cruelty free status and environmental impact! 

So why does it even matter? Why should you care what’s in your skincare? If it works and you’re seeing results do you really need to know all the particulars? The short answer here is..well..yes! We’re not saying you have to be brushed up on all the possible ingredients you may find on the back of that lotion bottle in your bathroom cabinet, however knowing what ingredients you DON’T want to see can go a long way in making sure your skin is both happy and healthy and that you can spot the products that will help to keep it that way. Knowing what’s in your skincare allows you to filter out any potentially harmful ingredients. Believe it or not there are some out there, as well as letting you discover which ingredients in particular work best for your skin. Skincare is very personalized, and knowing what’s in your favorite products can help you to decide which products would work the best for you in the future.

That’s why we’ve triple checked all of our own formulas against EWG standards, ensuring you’ll never find things like parabens, sulfates, mineral oils, PEGs, phthalates, silicones, artificial colors or fragrances in our formulas. Skin can be sensitive, especially during pregnancy, and we work hard to make sure our formulas are clean, gentle, and safe.

It’s truly never been easier to make informed decisions about your skincare.

To wrap it up, knowing what’s in the products you buy, skincare or otherwise, is an incredibly valuable tool to you as a consumer. As brands it’s our responsibility to offer up that information to you in as clear a way as possible so you can feel confident that you know exactly what you’re buying, what’s in it, and as a skincare brand what effects it will have on your skin. Part of taking care of ourselves is knowing what we’re putting on and in our bodies.
