SKINCARE - Prevention vs. Treatment
It is natural in life to be reactionary. Everyone does it, whether we’re talking daily decision- making, medicine, even our skincare. When we get sick we look for a treatment to fix what ails us. When we begin noticing wrinkles and signs of aging we start using retinoids and skincare aimed at reducing fine lines. We see blackheads or uneven skin tone and start looking into products that promise the remedy. We want a solution to the problem, whatever that may be, and we want it FAST. But what if our first move wasn’t a reaction to something but rather a step towards PREVENTING that problem in the first place? This is how we like to look at skincare.
While many products on the market focus on the treatment of your skin, providing a solution to a problem, here at Element Mom our main focus is to try to prevent that problem from even starting. We want to not just treat your skin in its current state, but go one step further to prevent any more skin damage and effects of aging. This is something that is focused on heavily in K-Beauty and as such is something that we are very much proponents of! It’s much easier to prevent wrinkles from forming than it is to turn back the hands of time and get rid of them!
PREVENTION: WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?
You might be wondering at this point what exactly prevention over treatment really means. The concept sounds simple enough, but what’s the science behind it, what are we really doing? And if we are focusing on prevention does this mean that we completely cast aside the concept of treating? An easy way to break this down would be to look at sunscreen as an example. We aren’t intentionally “treating” anything by using sunscreen. What we are doing is providing the skin with a protective barrier against the sun's harmful rays that can cause some serious damage from sunburns to skin cancer. This same concept can easily be applied to your skincare. Our products, like our Mega Moisturizing Probiotic Stretch Mark Cream, focus on prevention over treatment. This doesn’t however mean that we are completely casting a blind eye to ingredients that when put together can also have a beautiful rejuvenating effect on the skin, in essence “treating” the current state of your skin. By focusing on prevention we are still nourishing the skin with all of those lovely ingredients but, most importantly, we are also providing it with a protective barrier against future damage. We are giving your skin the moisture it needs to prepare to stretch and grow with your future baby-to-be!
We all want that gorgeous glow, and we want it to stick around as long as possible. But the truth is that as we age so does our skin. Without the proper care our skin can grow dull and it can seem like that once youthful glow is unattainable. By prepping your skin now for what’s to come later you can fight skin damage and aging before it even begins! As a mama this preventative approach can be especially helpful in regards to stretch marks and skin irritation that can easily accompany this time when your body is going through so many rapid and incredible changes. We’re sending your skin into the battlefield armed with the protection it needs to grow, stretch, and accommodate your baby while continuing to be healthy and strong.
Still not fully convinced? All you have to do is look at the simple facts on the differences between preventative and treatment based skincare and their results. Your skin is your body’s largest organ. As such it’s our job to take care of it like we would any other part of our body.! Of course there are treatments for things that may be hurting our body, in this case our skin. Things that WILL and have been PROVEN to help over a period of time. But treatments only go so far. Take your liver for example. If you drink like a fish every day of the week your liver isn’t exactly going to be throwing you a party. It’d probably be in pretty bad shape.! There are treatments that can help strengthen and heal your liver, but chances are it will never fully be the same as it was before it incurred all the damage over however many years. Now, take the same liver except instead of drinking copiously you either drink responsibly or abstain and you avoid the damage. You no longer need treatment, you’ve successfully prevented that course from ever happening.
Now look at your skin as the organ that it is. You can definitely treat years of damage from sun and other pollutants, and being honest here none of us has a perfect track record when it comes to skincare! But it has been proven time and time again that a healthy routine, healthy habits, and a good dose of good for you skincare that helps protect your skin from damage, will do incredible things for you and your skin for the long haul. By choosing products that help prevent skin damage we are actively preventing the need for future treatment as well. While this is true on a broad spectrum it’s especially important when talking about maternity skincare.
PREVENTATIVE SKIN-CARE AND MATERNITY
Many women view stretch-marks and skin irritation as inevitable when it comes to pregnancy. You know your body is about to undergo it’s most dramatic and rapid transformation yet and that doesn’t come without some literal growing pains! While stretch-marks in particular can be genetically predispositioned, we still do have some control over exactly how severe these stretch-marks can become. By choosing a skincare regimen that’s focused on the prevention of stretch-marks and general skin irritation, we can actively nurture our skin while ensuring we are working to protect it through all of the challenges pregnancy can bring. Plus, it just feels good! Our favorites are our Mega Moisturizing Stretch Mark Cream and Belly Mask, a dynamic duo that always leaves us feeling fresh, glowy and ready to take on the day...or night!
Ultimately there are a number of factors that go into having healthy beautiful skin both throughout pregnancy and just simply throughout your life. Everything from what we eat to what we put on our bodies plays a part. By focusing on prevention and nurturing our skin we are quite simply setting ourselves up for success, and looking gorgeous doing it!
